Chapter 12: Vanessa Turns
Vanessa requested a meeting with prosecutors.
She wanted a deal.
Her attorney claimed Adrian had manipulated her.
That argument might have worked if her videos had not shown how enthusiastically she participated.
Still, she had information.
She revealed hidden accounts.
Secret properties.
A private server Adrian believed no one could access.
Then she asked to speak with me.
I refused at first.
A week later, I changed my mind.
We met through a secure video call.
Vanessa appeared without makeup or jewelry.
She looked smaller.
Ordinary.
“I never thought he would hurt the babies,” she said.
“You encouraged him to drag me.”
“I thought you were exaggerating.”
“My doctor’s orders were on the nightstand.”
“I didn’t read them.”
“You laughed while my head hit the floor.”
Her eyes filled.
“I loved him.”
“No. You loved winning.”
She flinched.
I continued.
“You saw another woman’s marriage as a competition. You saw my pregnancy as an inconvenience. You helped a cruel man because his attention made you feel powerful.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Your apology belongs to the two children in intensive care.”
She lowered her gaze.
“Will you tell the prosecutor I cooperated?”
“No.”
“Mara—”
“I’ll tell the truth. Nothing more.”
The call ended.
Vanessa eventually accepted a plea agreement.
She received a reduced sentence for cooperating with the federal fraud investigation.
But she did not escape prison.
