Chapter 2: The Men at the Door

Chapter 2: The Men at the Door

Adrian stormed into the hallway.

“What the hell did you just say?”

Two uniformed security officers stood at the foot of the staircase. Behind them were three attorneys, a court-appointed property representative, and Claire Donovan.

Claire was sixty-two, silver-haired, and calm in the way only dangerous people could afford to be.

She looked past Adrian and saw me on the floor.

Her expression hardened.

“Mara?”

“I’m conscious,” I called weakly.

Claire’s gaze dropped to the blood beneath me.

“Where is the ambulance?”

“Two minutes out,” an officer answered.

Adrian spread his arms, blocking the staircase.

“This is my house. Everyone needs to leave.”

Claire opened a leather folder.

“No, Adrian. This house belongs to Bellweather Holdings. Your company defaulted on a secured loan forty-seven minutes ago. The controlling creditor exercised its contractual rights.”

“That’s impossible.”

“It was inevitable.”

Party guests had begun gathering in the foyer.

Some held drinks.

Others held phones.

The men Adrian had spent years humiliating were now recording his collapse.

His managing partner, Steven Cole, stepped forward.

“Adrian, what is she talking about?”

Adrian turned on him.

“Go home.”

Claire answered instead.

“Mr. Cross has been using investor capital to cover personal debts, private expenses, and unauthorized transfers.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her face had lost its smugness.

Adrian pointed at me.

“She did this.”

Every head turned.

I was still lying in the bedroom, bruised and bleeding, one hand wrapped around my stomach.

Claire walked past him and knelt beside me.

“She didn’t do this,” Claire said. “She stopped it.”

Sirens rose outside.

Adrian followed her into the bedroom.

“You think you can steal my firm?”

I looked up at him.

“You stole from your investors.”

“I built that company.”

“You built it with my money.”

His face emptied.

He finally understood.

The quiet wife he had dragged across the floor had never been financially dependent on him.

May you like

She had been his largest hidden creditor.

And now she was his owner.
