Chapter 7: The Woman Behind Bellweather

Chapter 7: The Woman Behind Bellweather
Three days after the twins were born, the board held an emergency meeting.
I attended from the hospital by video.
My face was pale.
My hair was unwashed.
A medical bracelet circled my wrist.
Adrian’s old partners sat around the polished table he had imported from Milan.
Most had never spoken directly to me.
They knew me only as the quiet wife who appeared at Christmas parties and left early.
Steven cleared his throat.
“Mara, we owe you an apology.”
“An apology won’t recover the missing money.”
“No.”
“Then let’s discuss what will.”
I presented the restructuring plan I had prepared months earlier.
Bellweather Holdings would stabilize the company.
Independent auditors would inspect every fund.
Affected employees would receive compensation.
Misled investors would be given full access to the records.
The firm would no longer carry Adrian’s name.
A board member named Thomas Reed leaned toward the camera.
“Why didn’t you reveal your ownership before?”
“Because I wanted to know whether Adrian could run the company without knowing his wife controlled its most important debt.”
“And what did you learn?”
“That he confused secrecy with stupidity.”
No one spoke.
I continued.
“My father created Bellweather Holdings. When he died, I inherited it. Adrian knew my family had money, but he believed most of it had been donated.”
In reality, I had quietly financed his first fund.
I had believed in his talent.
Then I discovered he was using my support to control me.
By the time I understood who he truly was, leaving required more than packing a suitcase.
It required dismantling the weapons he would use against me.
The board voted.
The company was renamed Bellweather Venture Partners.
I became interim chairwoman.

Not because I wanted Adrian’s throne.
Because I intended to burn every rotten part of it and build something cleaner from the remains.
