Chapter 14: The Empty Mansion

Chapter 14: The Empty Mansion
The divorce was finalized two months after the trial.
Adrian received no share of Bellweather.
No mansion.
No apartment.
No hidden account.
Most of his remaining assets were ordered returned to investors or used for restitution.
He was sentenced to twenty-three years in federal prison, with additional time for the assault charges.
I visited the mansion one final time before selling it.
The floors had been cleaned.
The broken champagne glasses were gone.
The bedroom had been emptied.
But when I stepped onto the polished oak, my body remembered.
For a moment, I heard my skull strike the floor again.
I heard Vanessa laugh.
I heard Adrian order me to get up.
Then Lily made a soft sound from her stroller.
I turned.
Noah was asleep beside her.
Sunlight streamed through the windows where party lights had once flickered.
Claire stood in the doorway.
“You don’t have to stay.”
“I know.”
I walked to the exact place where I had authorized the takeover.
The floor looked ordinary.
That surprised me.
Places of suffering should look different, I thought.
They should carry scars.
But houses do not remember.
People do.
I took the cracked phone from my purse.
I had kept it all this time.
Then I placed it on the floor and photographed it one last time.
Not as evidence.
As proof.
The woman who had lain there was not weak.
She had been injured.
Trapped.
Terrified.
But even from the floor, she had reached for the one thing that could open the door.
I picked up the phone.
Then I walked out.
The mansion sold three weeks later.

Every dollar went into a foundation for survivors of domestic abuse and their children.
Adrian’s house became the first thing he paid toward repairing the damage he had caused.
