Chapter 13: The Trial

Chapter 13: The Trial

Adrian’s criminal trial began nine months later.

By then, Lily and Noah were home.

Both were small for their age.

Both were healthy.

I entered the courthouse holding Claire’s arm.

Adrian sat at the defense table in a navy suit.

He looked older.

His hair had begun turning gray near the temples.

When he saw me, he smiled.

The same smile he used after every cruel act.

A smile meant to say we shared a secret.

I looked away.

The prosecution presented photographs of my injuries.

Medical testimony.

Financial records.

Vanessa’s videos.

Steven’s flash drive.

The message about losing the pregnancy.

Adrian’s defense argued that the texts were jokes.

That the assault was a marital argument taken out of context.

That I had engineered the financial investigation because I wanted revenge.

Then I testified.

His attorney asked why I had not left sooner.

“Because leaving an abusive man is most dangerous when he believes he is losing control.”

“You stayed while secretly planning to take his company.”

“I stayed while securing my safety.”

“You hated your husband.”

“By the end, yes.”

The attorney smiled as if I had given him what he wanted.

“So this was revenge.”

“No.”

I looked directly at the jury.

“Revenge would have been destroying something innocent because I was angry. I protected investors, employees, my children, and myself from a man who believed everyone around him existed to be used.”

The courtroom went quiet.

Adrian stopped smiling.

Three days later, the jury returned.

Guilty of assault.

Guilty of financial fraud.

Guilty of witness intimidation.

Guilty of conspiracy.

Guilty on nearly every major count.

As the verdicts were read, Adrian stared at me.

I felt nothing.

Not victory.

Not pity.

Only distance.

He had finally become what I had worked so hard to make him.

Powerless.
