Chapter 6: Vanessa’s Mistake

Chapter 6: Vanessa’s Mistake
Detective Brooks obtained Vanessa’s phone before sunrise.
By noon, the police had recovered twelve deleted videos.
In one, Vanessa filmed Adrian pouring a glass of water onto me while I slept.
In another, she laughed as he removed my prescribed medication and replaced it with vitamins.
The final video was recorded outside the bedroom on the night of the party.
It captured Adrian grabbing my ankles.
It captured my head striking the floor.
It captured Vanessa’s voice saying, “Pull harder. She’s still holding onto the bed.”
Vanessa had accidentally created the strongest evidence against herself.
She was arrested before lunch.
When Detective Brooks told me, I was sitting beside Noah’s incubator.
His body looked impossibly small beneath the tubes and wires.
One of his hands was no bigger than the tip of my thumb.
“Will she be charged?” I asked.
“Assault, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and possibly attempted harm to an unborn child. Prosecutors are reviewing everything.”
“And Adrian?”
“His attorney is asking for bail.”
I watched Noah’s chest rise beneath the ventilator.
“Will he get it?”
“Money usually helps.”
“He doesn’t have any.”
Detective Brooks gave me a faint smile.
“Not anymore.”
The financial investigation expanded quickly.
Federal agents entered Adrian’s offices.
Computers were seized.
Accounts were frozen.
Former employees began calling reporters.
Investors demanded answers.
The story moved from local news to national television before evening.
But the headlines did not call me weak.
They called me the hidden creditor who took down a fraudulent venture capital king.
I hated the attention.
I hated strangers debating my marriage.
I hated hearing Adrian described as charming by people who had only met him at conferences.
But every time I considered hiding, I looked at my children.
Adrian had relied on my silence.
May you like
Silence had been his safest asset.
I decided to take it away.
