Chapter 13 - The Verdict & Fall

After a brief two-hour deliberation—one of the fastest in state history for a complex financial case—the jury returned to the courtroom.

"Will the defendants please rise," Judge Harrison ordered.

Julian and Eleanor stood up slowly, clutching the edge of the defense table.

"On Count 1: First-Degree Domestic Assault and Battery," the foreperson read aloud, "we find the defendant, Julian Vance, GUILTY."

Audrey took a quiet, deep breath, holding her father’s hand under the table.

"On Count 2: Grand Identity Theft and Financial Fraud—GUILTY." "On Count 3: Wire Schemes and Forgery—GUILTY." "On Count 4: Evidence Tampering and Perjury—GUILTY."

A collective murmur broke out in the spectator gallery.

The foreperson turned to Eleanor. "On the counts of Criminal Conspiracy, Wire Fraud, and Aiding in Financial Misappropriation, we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance, GUILTY."

Judge Harrison slammed his gavel down, restoring silence. He looked over his glasses at Julian with stern, cold disdain.

"Julian Vance," Judge Harrison stated, "your actions demonstrate a sociopathic disregard for the safety, dignity, and legal rights of another human being. You abused your position, your marriage, and your power."

The judge cleared his throat.

"I sentence you to twenty-two years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. Additionally, full financial restitution in the amount of $1.8 million is hereby ordered."

Julian collapsed into his chair, covering his face as sob pulled from his chest.

"Eleanor Vance," the judge continued, "for your role in orchestrating and benefiting from these fraudulent transfers, you are sentenced to seven years in federal custody."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort the crying mother and son away to separate prison transports, Eleanor reached out toward Julian, screaming his name, but the heavy doors swung shut between them, sealing their fate forever.
