Chapter 6 - The Counterattack

From inside the county detention center, Julian was losing his mind. The pristine suits were gone, replaced by a drab orange jumpsuit. But his desperate arrogance hadn't fully died.
During a monitored visit with his court-appointed public defender—since he could no longer afford private council—Julian slammed his fist on the metal desk.
"She set me up!" Julian insisted frantically. "Audrey manipulated the books! She was the senior auditor! She created those fake transfers to frame me so she could take everything in the divorce!"
The young public defender sighed, rubbing his temples. "Julian, the prosecution has forensic digital signatures tied to your personal laptop IP. How do you explain that?"
"She had my passwords!" Julian lied smoothly, leaning in. "Listen to me... I have a backup cloud drive. I planted files on it months ago just in case she ever tried something like this. Receipts showing she transferred money into offshore accounts in her father's name. If we release those to the press, it will ruin her credibility!"
What Julian didn't know was that every recorded call and monitored meeting in the facility was being transcribed under court supervision due to the ongoing federal investigation.
That evening, Julian’s former college friend, a sleazy tabloid blogger named Marcus, received an anonymous encrypted email containing the fabricated files Julian had orchestrated.
By midnight, Marcus posted a explosive headline online: "HERO AUDITOR OR MASTERMIND? LEAKED DOCUMENTS CLAIM AUDREY VANCE FRAMED HUSBAND!"
For a brief twelve hours, social media erupted with dramatic debate. Comments flooded in: Is she really the victim? Or did she plan this whole thing?
In the command center of her lawyer's office, Audrey watched the media storm unfold.
"Should we issue a statement?" Sarah Lin asked, concerned. "This leak is gaining traction on viral news boards."
"No," Audrey said, a small, calculating smile playing on her lips. "Let Julian think his trap worked. He just walked right into mine."
Audrey pulled out a flash drive and handed it to Sarah. "This drive contains the original creation metadata of those leaked files. Julian created them three days after he assaulted me, using a public Wi-Fi network at his gym. He left his device's unique MAC address embedded in the file structure."

"He just committed felony evidence tampering and filing a false report while on bail application," Sarah breathed out, amazed.
"Exactly," Audrey nodded. "He didn't save himself. He just guaranteed his bail will be permanently denied."
