Chapter 3 - The Cold Asset Freeze

By 2:00 p.m. that same afternoon, Julian was sitting in the back of his mother’s car in the parking lot of a high-end financial district bank, sweat soaking through the collar of his expensive dress shirt.

Eleanor was hyperventilating in the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were stark white. "Call your lawyer, Julian! Call him right now! This is an outrage! That ungrateful girl is trying to ruin us!"

"I am calling him!" Julian shouted, his thumb frantically pounding his phone screen. "He's not answering!"

When his corporate attorney finally picked up on the fifth ring, his voice was curt and devoid of its usual warmth. "Julian. I was just about to call you."

"Mark! Thank God," Julian breathed out a sigh of relief. "My wife has lost her mind. She’s had her father serve me with fake papers and—"

"Julian, shut up and listen to me," Mark interrupted coldly. "I cannot represent you."

Julian froze. "What? Why?"

"Because three hours ago, an emergency injunction was executed by a federal judge. All of your personal bank accounts, your commercial lines of credit, and your investment portfolios have been completely frozen under the Fraud and Misappropriation Act."

"Frozen?!" Eleanor screamed from the front seat, having overheard the speakerphone. "They can't freeze my accounts!"

"They already did, Mrs. Vance," Mark replied flatly. "The forensic audit trail provided by Audrey's legal team showed direct commingling of stolen funds in your primary accounts. Furthermore, Julian, your firm’s executive board has just been notified. They have placed you on administrative leave without pay, pending an internal investigation."

"No... no, no, no," Julian stammered, pulling at his tie as if he couldn't breathe. "Mark, you have to do something! I need cash! I have payments due on the BMW, the country club membership, the—"

"You need a criminal defense attorney, Julian," Mark said bluntly. "And you need one fast. The evidence package your wife handed to the federal prosecutor is ironclad. It contains metadata, IP logs, and notarized banking records that prove systematic forgery over eighteen months. You’re not fighting a divorce here, Julian. You’re facing ten to fifteen years in federal prison."

The line went dead.

Julian stared at his phone screen in horror. The reality hit him like a physical blow.

He tapped his mobile banking app, attempting to transfer funds from his backup savings account.

A stark red box flashed across the screen: ACCOUNT RESTRICTED. ACCESS DENIED. CONTACT LEADER LEGAL DIVISION.

"It's all locked," Julian whispered, his voice trembling violently. "Everything is gone."

Meanwhile, six miles away in a high-rise office overlooking the city skyline, Audrey sat in a quiet, sunlit conference room.

A ice pack rested gently against her swollen cheek, but her eyes were clear, focused, and steady. For the first time in three years, the crushing weight on her chest was gone.

Across the table sat her father, alongside Sarah Lin, one of the top white-collar trial attorneys in the state.

"The injunctions were granted within forty-five minutes of filing," Sarah said, sliding a sleek tablet across the table to Audrey. "Julian and his mother are completely locked out of every liquid asset they possess. They can't even buy a cup of coffee using credit right now."

Audrey looked at the screen, watching the status of the frozen accounts update in real-time. "What about the townhouse?"

"Secured," Sarah smiled tightly. "The deed was never successfully transferred because the notary stamp Julian forged was flagged by our system. The property is officially 100% yours, and we've already placed armed security on the premises to ensure Julian doesn't attempt to return."

Audrey took a slow, deep breath, feeling the minor ache in her ribs, but refusing to let the pain control her.

"Julian won't go down quietly," Audrey said softly. "He thinks he's the smartest man in every room. When he realizes he can't buy his way out of this, he'll get aggressive."

Arthur leaned forward, reaching across the table to place his hand over his daughter’s.

"Let him try," her father said, his tone dark and resolute. "He fought a helpless woman in the dark, Audrey. Now he has to fight us in the light."

Audrey looked out the window at the bustling city below. She knew this was only the beginning of the storm, but as she watched the sun gleam off the steel skyscrapers, a cold, dangerous smile touched her lips.

Julian thought he was destroying her life. He didn't realize he had just handed her the keys to his destruction.
