Chapter 7 - Breaking the Syndicate

The fallout from Julian’s failed counterattack was immediate, but it triggered a chain reaction he hadn't anticipated.

When news broke that Julian Vance was under federal scrutiny, the legitimate banks weren't the only ones taking notice. Deep in the city’s financial underbelly, a high-interest underground lending syndicate known as the Sterling Group realized their secret $800,000 loan to Julian was now severely at risk.

Julian had borrowed the dark money a year earlier to cover his gambling losses at offshore casinos—using Eleanor’s colonial home as unbacked collateral.

On Thursday night, two heavy-set men in dark coats arrived at Eleanor’s residence. They didn't knock softly.

When Eleanor opened the door, trembling, the lead man—a cold-eyed enforcer named Viktor—stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.

"Mrs. Vance," Viktor said smoothly, tossing a thick ledger onto her glass table. "Your son’s interest payment is three weeks overdue. With compounding penalties, the balance stands at $920,000."

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Eleanor sobbed, backing away. "Julian is in custody! The courts have frozen our money! Talk to his wife!"

Viktor chuckled, a terrifying, humorless sound. "We know all about Audrey Vance. She’s smart. She secured her assets legally. Which leaves us with you and this house."

"You can't take my house!" Eleanor gasped.

"Julian signed a secondary deed agreement with us six months ago," Viktor said, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "You have seventy-two hours to clear his debt, Mrs. Vance. Or my associates will begin liquidating your private antiques personally. Tell Julian when you visit him: the clock is ticking."

Terrified, Eleanor drove directly to the jail the next morning, weeping in the visiting room.

"Julian, what did you do?!" she screamed through the glass partition. "Dangerous men came to the house! They have deeds! They have your signature!"

Julian gripped the phone, panic choking him. "Mother, you have to sell your jewelry! Pay them off!"

"I don't have enough!" she shrieked. "Audrey took everything! She ruined us!"

Through the glass, Julian looked at his weeping mother, realizing for the first time that no savior was coming. The house of cards he had built out of lies, theft, and cruelty was finally collapsing on top of them both.
