Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

By 8:45 AM on Monday morning, Julian stood in the lobby of Vance & Sterling Financial, frantically trying to smooth down his tailored jacket. He hadn’t slept in forty-eight hours. His personal credit cards had been declined at his usual coffee shop, forcing him to pay with spare bills he found in his mother’s glove compartment.

If I can just reach my office, Julian thought, his pulse hammering in his ears, I can clear my local drives, transfer the offshore ledgers to a clean drive, and talk the Managing Director into standing behind me.

He slid his executive keycard into the private elevator reader.

BEEP-BEEP. A harsh red light flashed.

Julian frowned and swiped it again. BEEP-BEEP.

"Having trouble with your credentials, Vance?"

Julian spun around. Standing near the glass entrance were two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Enforcement unit, accompanied by David Sterling—the firm’s senior founding partner.

"David!" Julian forced a bright, confident smile, though cold sweat prickled at the back of his neck. "There’s been a massive technical glitch with my security badge this morning. Good thing you’re here. We need to talk about some absurd rumors—"

"It’s not a glitch, Julian," David Sterling said flatly, his arms crossed over his chest. "Your security clearances were revoked at 6:00 AM today. Your firm-issued phone and laptop have been remotely wiped and locked."

Julian gasped, his face draining of color. "David, listen to me! This is my bitter ex-wife trying to ruin my reputation! She’s playing games because of a messy separation—"

"Your 'ex-wife' happens to be Senior Auditor Audrey Vance," David snapped, stepping forward. "And the evidence package she submitted to our compliance committee at midnight didn't contain 'rumors.' It contained detailed transaction logs showing you routed $1.2 million of client funds through dummy shell accounts registered to your mother's estate!"

"That’s a lie!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking as several lower-level analysts stopped in the lobby to stare.

"Internal Audit is in your office right now with federal marshals," David continued, completely unfazed. "They've already recovered the physical signature pads you used to forge client approvals. You're finished here, Julian."

Before Julian could process the blow, the two officers stepped up beside him.

"Julian Vance," the lead officer said, producing a pair of chrome handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand embezzlement, identity fraud, and wire schemes."

"Wait! You can't do this here!" Julian pleaded, pulling back as the cold metal snapped around his wrists. "Do you know who I am?! Call my mother! Call my lawyer!"

"Oh, your mother is already being questioned at her residence," the officer replied calmly, turning Julian toward the glass doors where two news cameras—tipped off by an anonymous source—were already flashing furiously.

As Julian was led out in handcuffs past his whispering peers, he caught sight of a sleek black sedan parked across the street. The rear window rolled down just an inch.

Behind the dark tint, Audrey sat silently, wearing dark sunglasses, watching her husband's humiliation unfold with serene, unyielding calmness.
