Chapter 4 - THE RED VELVET RIBBON

By 3:00 AM, the storm outside had settled into a steady, gray drizzle.

Lily was fast asleep in the center of the master bed, her breathing deep, rhythmic, and peaceful. Her small left hand was woven tightly into the fabric of Claire’s cardigan sleeve, refusing to let go even in slumber.

Claire sat on the edge of the mattress, gently stroking the little girl’s dark curls.

Between Lily’s fingers, the torn piece of red velvet ribbon remained clutched like a talisman.

The nursery door opened with a silent click.

Gabriel stepped inside, holding two porcelain mugs of black coffee. He had changed into a simple black cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking less like a shadow king and more like an exhausted, grieving father.

He handed a mug to Claire, sitting in the armchair beside the bed.

"She hasn't slept through the night since the ambush," Gabriel murmured, his eyes fixed on his daughter’s peaceful face. "Every time she closed her eyes, she woke up screaming that the fire was coming."

"She’s carrying the shock in her muscles, Mr. Varrick," Claire explained softly, taking a sip of the hot coffee. "When children experience catastrophic violence, their minds disconnect from language. They speak through silence, through refusal, through objects."

Claire gently lifted Lily’s tiny hand, pointing to the red velvet ribbon.

"Where did this ribbon come from, Mr. Varrick?"

Gabriel frowned, leaning forward to inspect the scrap of cloth. "It belonged to Elena. On the morning of the attack, Elena wore a custom ivory wool coat with red velvet piping along the lapels and cuffs. She bought it in Milan two weeks before she died."

"Lily didn't just pick this up from the floor," Claire said, her voice dropping into a serious, analytical tone. "Look at the edge. It wasn't torn by glass or metal. It was cut with sharp fabric shears. The weave is completely straight."

Gabriel’s gray eyes narrowed into razor-sharp slits. "What are you saying?"

"In child development, children who are threatened by someone close to them will often hoard a physical piece of evidence from the scene," Claire revealed. "They keep it hidden because they are terrified that if the traitor sees it, they will finish the job. Lily isn't just traumatized by the shooting on the FDR Drive, Mr. Varrick. She is terrified of someone inside this penthouse."

Gabriel stood up slowly, his broad frame casting a long, menacing shadow across the wall. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

"The only people who had access to Elena’s wardrobe after the ambush," Gabriel whispered, every word laced with lethal, calculating rage, "were the household staff, the forensic cleanup team... and her sister, Victoria."

Before Claire could answer, Lily stirred softly on the pillows.

The four-year-old girl opened her dark eyes, looking up at her father standing above the bed. She didn't flinch. She reached out her small hand, showing Gabriel the red ribbon, and whispered three words that shattered the silence of the penthouse:

"Aunt Tori cut it."
