Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION IN THE STUDY

The executive study on the top floor of the penthouse was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a crackling limestone fireplace.
Victoria Vance sat behind Gabriel’s massive antique mahogany desk, wearing her emerald silk dress, sipping an espresso while reviewing financial transfer documents on an encrypted tablet.
The heavy double doors of the study swung open smoothly.
Victoria looked up, a polished, professional smile spreading across her lips. "Gabriel, darling. I was just reviewing the charitable trust allocations. We need to sign the secondary power of attorney so I can manage Elena’s foundation accounts while you focus on Lily’s recovery—"
SLAM.
Dante stepped through the doorway behind Gabriel, locking the heavy brass deadbolt, pulling down the velvet privacy blinds over the glass walls.
Gabriel walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping two feet from the desk. He did not sit down. He set his loaded Kimber .45 on the leather blotter with a heavy, echoing THUD.
Victoria’s smile faltered, her blue eyes darting nervously from the weapon to Gabriel’s face.
"Gabriel... what is this?" Victoria stammered, her voice tight with forced amusement. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Gabriel reached into his pocket, pulled out the scrap of red velvet ribbon, and dropped it onto the glass table directly over her financial documents.
Victoria froze. Her breath caught in her throat as if an icy hand had clamped down on her windpipe.
"Where did you put the GPS transponder after you cut this ribbon from my dead wife’s coat, Victoria?" Gabriel asked, his voice low, smooth, and colder than arctic stone.
Victoria’s face went chalk-white. She pushed her chair backward, her manicured hands gripping the armrests.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about! Gabriel, this is insane! I loved Elena! She was my sister!"
"You loved her forty percent share of the Brooklyn maritime freight terminals, Victoria," Gabriel said, leaning over the desk until his face was inches from hers. "You owed fourteen million dollars to Salvatore Marcone’s offshore casino in Macau from your failed luxury hotel developments in Dubai."
Gabriel tapped the tablet on the desk.
"Dante pulled your encrypted signal logs twenty minutes ago," Gabriel stated cleanly. "You rerouted Elena’s convoy onto the FDR Drive. You placed the Marcone military-grade transponder inside her coat pocket fifteen minutes before she left this tower. And you threatened my four-year-old daughter with execution if she spoke a single word."
Victoria’s composure completely disintegrated.
The elegant, high-society heiress vanished, replaced by a feral, cornered predator. Her lips pulled back into a vicious, trembling sneer, tears of pure, toxic desperation spilling down her foundation-caked cheeks.
"Elena had everything!" Victoria shrieked, slamming her palms onto the desk, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "She married the king of New York! She lived in a forty-million-dollar palace while our father left me with a bankrupt foundation and debts in three countries! Salvatore Marcone promised me that if Elena was removed, I would inherit her forty percent voting shares and control the harbor logistics!"
"And Lily?" Gabriel whispered, his eyes narrowing into black voids. "What did Marcone promise you about my daughter?"
Victoria let out a dry, hysterical laugh.
"Salvatore wanted Lily as leverage to force you out of New York Harbor, Gabriel!" Victoria hissed. "I was going to send her to a private residential boarding school in Switzerland next week! She was supposed to disappear quietly!"
Gabriel closed his eyes for two seconds, letting out a slow, quiet breath of absolute closure.
"Thank you for the confession, Victoria," Gabriel murmured softly.
Dante stepped forward from the shadows, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs and a certified federal recording terminal.
"Dante," Gabriel commanded flatly, picking up his Kimber .45 from the desk. "Deliver Miss Vance to the basement holding cells at Pier 42. Inform Salvatore Marcone that his insider has been compromised."

Gabriel turned toward the door.
"And tell my men to prepare the harbor fleet," Gabriel added coldly. "Tonight, the Marcone family ceases to exist in the State of New York."
