Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM ROUTE

Gabriel Varrick did not shout. He did not slam his fist against the wall.

He stood frozen beside his daughter’s bed, his face draining of color until his skin looked like carved marble. The sheer, suffocating stillness that radiated from him was more terrifying than any roar of anger.

"Lily," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a gentle, trembling whisper as he knelt beside the mattress. "What did Aunt Tori do with the ribbon, sweetheart?"

Lily curled closer into Claire’s side, clutching Claire’s sweater with one hand while holding the red fabric toward her father with the other.

"Aunt Tori came into Mommy's closet after the loud noises," Lily whispered, her small voice trembling with the raw, terrifying clarity of a child’s memory. "She had the silver scissors. She cut Mommy's red ribbon from the coat and put the little black box inside Mommy's secret pocket. She told me... she told me if I told Daddy about the black box, the bad men with the wolf masks would come back to my bedroom."

Claire felt a cold shiver race down her spine.

The bad men with the wolf masks.

"The Marcone syndicate," Gabriel muttered under his breath, his eyes darkening with absolute, diamond-hard fury. "Salvatore Marcone’s private enforcers wear wolf-head pins on their lapels."

Gabriel stood up smoothly, turning to Claire.

"Stay with Lily," Gabriel commanded softly. "Lock the deadbolt from the inside. Do not open this door for anyone except Dante or myself."

Gabriel walked out into the private security hub on the penthouse’s lower mezzanine.

The room was illuminated by twenty high-definition monitors displaying live surveillance feeds of the entire building, the perimeter docks, and the private elevator banks. Dante sat at the central terminal, flanked by two cyber-forensics specialists.

"Dante," Gabriel said, his voice flat as grave dirt. "Pull the encrypted route logs from Elena’s Escalade on the morning of the ambush."

Dante tapped his keyboard, pulling up the GPS telematics file: OCTOBER 14 — 11:42 AM — FDR DRIVE NORTHBOUND.

"Look at the navigation override at 11:38 AM," Gabriel instructed, pointing at the screen with an iron finger. "The vehicle deviated from the primary secured corridor on West Street and routed onto the FDR Drive through the South Street ramp. Who entered that route update into the central server?"

The cyber specialist cross-referenced the authorization token.

Within thirty seconds, the digital fingerprint flashed in bright red text on the primary monitor:

AUTHORIZATION TOKEN: VANCE_V_SECURE_TOKEN_04

USER ID: VICTORIA VANCE (MANAGING DIRECTOR — VARRICK FOUNDATION)

TIMESTAMP: OCTOBER 14 — 11:36 AM

"Jesus Christ, Boss," Dante breathed, his hand instinctively dropping to the Glock 17 holstered on his chest. "Victoria changed the convoy route two minutes before the first shooter opened fire from the overpass."

Gabriel pulled a sleek, custom-crafted Kimber .45 from his shoulder holster, checked the magazine with a sharp metallic CLACK, and racked the slide.

"Where is Victoria right now?" Gabriel asked.

"She’s in the primary executive study on the penthouse terrace, Boss," Dante answered, checking the optical camera feed. "Reviewing the foundation's asset liquidation accounts."

Gabriel turned toward the marble staircase, his eyes burning with the cold, unyielding wrath of an executioner.

"Bring the zip-ties and the audio recorder, Dante," Gabriel said softly. "It’s time to settle the family estate."
