Chapter 11 - Whispers in the Gallery

The morning sun cast long, golden slants across the private art gallery on the top floor of the Moretti Tower, but the warmth of the day did little to thaw the chill inside the room.

Sophia stood before an oversized canvas of abstract brushstrokes, her reflection faintly visible in the protective glass. In her hand, she held a porcelain cup of black coffee, though she hadn’t taken a sip in ten minutes. Behind her, the soft, rhythmic patter of tiny silver slippers signaled Emma’s approach.

“Mommy, look what Uncle Marcus gave me!” Emma chimed, holding up a small, intricately carved wooden music box.

Sophia turned, offering a gentle smile as she knelt to examine the gift. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart. Did you say thank you?”

“With a big hug,” Emma declared proudly, winding the brass key on the side. A delicate, tinkling lullaby filled the high-ceilinged gallery, echoing off the marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan.

The moment the music faded, the heavy double doors at the end of the gallery clicked open.

Aleandro walked in, his long stride measured and deliberate. His expression was carefully neutral, but Sophia knew the subtle tightening at the corners of his eyes too well. He wasn't alone. Trailing a few paces behind him was a man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit—Vincenzo Rossi, the senior counsel for the Moretti estate and a relic of the old guard who had served Aleandro’s father.

“Sophia,” Aleandro said, his voice dropping into that familiar, resonant register that commanded immediate attention. He stopped a few feet away, glancing down at Emma before meeting Sophia’s eyes. “Vincenzo brought the final international restructuring reports from the Zurich holdings. There is a matter we need to discuss regarding the transition of the Romano shipping lanes.”

Sophia stood up slowly, setting her coffee cup down on a nearby mahogany console. “Emma, honey, why don’t you take your music box and your rabbit into the East Parlor? Mommy and Aleandro have to talk about grown-up business for a few minutes.”

Emma nodded solemnly, clutching her stuffed rabbit under one arm and the music box in the other, before skipping off down the corridor under the watchful eye of a stationed security guard.

Once the heavy doors clicked shut behind the child, Vincenzo stepped forward, opening a leather-bound folio.

“Mr. Moretti, Mrs. Moretti,” Vincenzo began, his voice dry and measured. “The transition of the Romano assets has legally cleared the New York courts. However, our intelligence division in Geneva has flagged an unexpected movement of capital from a dormant Swiss account tied to Julian Romano’s offshore network.”

Aleandro’s eyes narrowed. “How much?”

“Forty million dollars,” Vincenzo replied, sliding a financial ledger across the glass table. “And it wasn't wired to a standard shell company. It was routed through a holding entity registered under a name we haven’t heard in three years: The Sterling Syndicate.”

Sophia caught her breath, stepping closer to the table. The name sent a cold shiver down her spine. Long before Julian Romano had tried to seize control of the Moretti shipping routes, whispered legends of the Sterling Syndicate had circulated through the underworld—a shadowy cabal of European power brokers who manipulated real estate markets and political elections from the shadows.

“I thought the Sterling Syndicate dissolved after the London collapse,” Sophia said, her voice tight.

“So did everyone else,” Aleandro answered, his jaw clenching as a dark, dangerous light flickered in his midnight eyes. He looked up at Vincenzo. “Julian wasn't acting alone when he tried to take over my supply chains six years ago, and he certainly wasn't acting alone the night he poisoned Valentina.”

Vincenzo nodded grimly. “Precisely, Boss. Julian was just a regional front. Whoever controls the Sterling Syndicate is still operating out of Geneva, and they now know that Emma is the sole biological heir to both the Romano and Moretti lines. They view her existence as a direct threat to their upcoming European mergers.”

Aleandro didn’t raise his voice. He didn't punch the wall or issue a theatrical threat. Instead, his silence was far more terrifying—the absolute stillness of a predator whose family had just been marked by invisible enemies across the sea.

“Book a private flight to Geneva for tomorrow night,” Aleandro instructed quietly, his gaze locked onto the horizon outside the window.

Sophia stepped forward, placing her hand firmly over his clenched fist. Her fingers were steady, the fear of her past life entirely replaced by an unbreakable, fierce resolve.

“We’re going together,” Sophia said.

Aleandro looked down at her, the hard lines of his face softening as he intertwined his fingers with hers. “It’s a war zone over there, Sophia. It’s not like New York.”

“I spent two years hiding from ghosts in your house, Aleandro,” Sophia replied, her midnight-blue eyes flashing with fierce determination. “I’m done hiding. If they want to come for my family, they’ll have to get through both of us.”
