Chapter 12 - Shadows Over Geneva

The private Gulfstream touched down at Geneva International Airport beneath a heavy blanket of Alpine mist and freezing drizzle. The air outside the cabin was sharp, smelling of pine, damp stone, and distant snow.

Unlike the chaotic energy of New York, Geneva moved with a cold, terrifyingly quiet efficiency. Black Mercedes-Benz sedans with diplomatic plates waited on the private tarmac, their tinted windows reflecting the grey light of the Swiss dawn.

Marcus held the car door open as Sophia and Aleandro descended the portable stairs, keeping Emma securely wrapped in a heavy cashmere coat against the European chill.

“The safe house in the old town is secured,” Marcus reported quietly, ducking his head against the wind as he handed Aleandro a secure encrypted tablet. “Local authorities are completely insulated, but our surveillance indicates that someone from the Sterling Syndicate’s legal arm has already tracked our flight path.”

Aleandro scanned the data on the screen while sliding into the back seat beside Sophia. Emma sat between them, happily coloring in a digital sketchpad on a tablet while completely oblivious to the elite bodyguards, counter-surveillance teams, and international assassins circling their perimeter.

“They aren’t waiting for us to make the first move,” Aleandro observed, his voice cold as ice. He locked the tablet and set it aside. “They want us to come straight to their headquarters at the Grand Quai.”

The convoy rolled silently through the pristine, cobblestone streets of Geneva, past gothic stone cathedrals and gleaming banking institutions whose Swiss-franc vaults held the dirty secrets of half the world’s elite.

Within forty minutes, the cars pulled up before an imposing, nineteenth-century limestone fortress overlooking Lake Geneva. Iron gates bearing an ornate, interwoven ‘S’ emblem swung open automatically, welcoming them into a gravel courtyard surrounded by high stone walls and armed private security.

As the car door opened, a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke navy suit stepped forward under the grand portico. His posture was rigid, his smile polite but entirely devoid of warmth.

“Mr. Moretti. Welcome to Geneva,” the man said in flawless, accented English, extending a gloved hand. “I am Director Henri Vance of the Sterling Council.”

Aleandro did not shake the outstretched hand. Instead, he stepped out of the vehicle first, turning to help Sophia and Emma out onto the damp gravel. He positioned himself squarely in front of them, his broad shoulders blocking the Swiss director from view.

“Cut the diplomatic pleasantries, Henri,” Aleandro’s voice cut through the cold mountain air like a razor. “You didn't invite us across the Atlantic to discuss banking portfolios.”

Henri Vance lowered his hand slowly, an unbothered, thin smile touching his lips. He let his gaze drift past Aleandro, locking eyes for a fraction of a second on little Emma, who was busy showing her stuffed rabbit a passing Swiss pigeon.

“A sharp man, as expected,” Vance murmured smoothly. “And a remarkably resilient child. It is a pity, really. If Julian Romano had possessed half your discipline, his daughter would still be alive, and none of this international unpleasantness would be necessary.”

Aleandro’s hand twitched instinctively toward the custom firearm holstered beneath his suit jacket. “Say another word about my family, and you won't live long enough to see the sun set over this lake.”

Vance raised his hands slightly in a gesture of mock surrender, though his eyes remained as cold as alpine ice. “Threats are so pedestrian, Mr. Moretti. Come inside out of the cold. The board is waiting, and we have a very simple proposition to discuss: your empire, or your daughter’s future.”
