Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Don

The hallway outside the grand ballroom smelled of cold stone and expensive cigar smoke, but to Sophia, it smelled like an executioner’s block.

She kept Emma tucked tightly against her chest, the little girl’s small arms wrapped securely around her neck. Sophia forced her breathing to steady, lifting her chin with a fragile, desperate defiance that had kept her alive in the slums for years.

"My shift ended ten minutes ago, Mr. Moretti," Sophia said, her voice trembling only slightly. "I have a child to put to bed. Let go of my arm."

Aleandro didn’t let go. Instead, his dark gaze shifted slowly from Sophia’s pale, dirt-smudged face down to Emma. The little girl turned her head, peeking out from behind her mother’s shoulder with large, luminous eyes that mirrored the exact shade of midnight blue as the man standing before her.

For a long, agonizing moment, the air between them grew so dense it felt impossible to breathe.

"Your shift ended," Aleandro repeated, his voice dangerously low, tasting every single word as if it were a riddle he was finally solving. "And yet, in two years of employment, no one ever told me that one of my housemaids has a child with my mother’s eyes."

Sophia flinched as if struck by a whip. "You're imagining things. Let me pass."

"Am I?" Aleandro took a slow step forward, forcing Sophia back against the mahogany wall. His massive frame completely boxed her in. "Valentina is dead on the ballroom floor. Poisoned. A cup poured by her own personal staff, meant exclusively for her lips. But before she died, she made a public spectacle of your daughter—a spectacle that drew every single eye in New York onto this hallway."

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper that sent a shiver straight down Sophia’s spine.

"Someone wanted Valentina dead tonight. And someone else wanted this room to be watching when your daughter stepped onto that floor. You didn't just stumble into a high-society party, Sophia. You walked right into the middle of a war zone. And you brought my blood with you."

Before Sophia could formulate a lie, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor.

"Boss!"

It was Marcus, Aleandro’s chief enforcer, his suit jacket stained with sweat, a grim look carved across his scarred face. He stopped short when he saw Sophia and the child trapped against the wall, but professional urgency forced him to speak immediately.

"We locked down the estate. Perimeter is secure. Forensics are on their way. But... we checked the kitchen staff logs and the security cameras for the private bar." Marcus swallowed hard, glancing nervously at Aleandro. "The poison wasn't slipped in by a kitchen maid, Boss. And it wasn't a random assassin."

Aleandro narrowed his eyes. "Spit it out, Marcus."

"It was registered under the security clearance badge of Julian Romano—Valentina’s own father."

The hallway plunged into a dead, absolute silence.

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Julian Romano—the city’s most ruthless real estate tycoon, a man tied elbow-deep in international cartels and political blackmail.

Aleandro’s face didn't change expression, but the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. The dark promise of absolute, merciless violence radiated from his shoulders.

"He thought by marrying his daughter to me, he’d control my shipping routes," Aleandro whispered, a terrifying, humorless smirk touching the corner of his lips. "When he realized I was cutting him out of the syndicates... he decided to eliminate her at her own engagement party, and frame my household for the murder."

Aleandro slowly turned his gaze back to Sophia, his eyes burning with an intense, possessive fire.

"Which means," the mafia don said softly, lifting a finger to gently brush a stray lock of hair away from Emma’s forehead, "your little girl wasn't just picked for a cruel joke tonight, Sophia. She was chosen as a disposable witness. And the men who killed Valentina... are already looking for a way to silence both of you before dawn."
