Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

The Swiss Federal Police escorted the remaining members of the Sterling Council out of the grand boardroom in handcuffs, their expensive suits looking crumpled and pathetic against the austere stone walls of the Geneva fortress.
Henri Vance walked past Aleandro and Sophia with his head bowed, the once-untouchable mastermind reduced to a broken old man facing a lifetime behind bars.
When the heavy oak doors finally clicked shut, sealing the room in profound, echoing silence, the tension that had filled the air for hours evaporated.
Sophia let out a long, slow breath, leaning back against her chair. The immense weight she had carried for six years—the fear, the constant running, the hiding in the shadows of the laundromat—was finally gone.
Aleandro walked over to her, gently setting Emma down on the Persian rug with a small wooden puzzle he had picked up from the side table. He pulled Sophia up from her chair, wrapping both arms around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest.
“It’s over,” Aleandro murmured softly, burying his face in the crook of her neck. “You never have to look over your shoulder again, Sophia. Never.”
Sophia wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder as tears of pure, unadulterated relief spilled over her lashes. “We’re safe,” she whispered. “Our family is safe.”
“Forever,” Aleandro promised, pressing a deep, lingering kiss to her lips.
Nearby, Emma looked up from her puzzle, tilting her head with innocent curiosity. “Mommy? Are we going home to New York now?”

Sophia pulled back from Aleandro, wiping a tear from her cheek as a radiant, joyful smile broke across her face. She walked over, scooped Emma up into her arms, and kissed both of the little girl’s rosy cheeks.
“Yes, baby girl,” Sophia whispered, her voice overflowing with happiness. “We’re going home.”
