Chapter 8 - The Inheritance of Truth

The sun rose over New York Harbor, painting the Manhattan skyline in brilliant strokes of gold, copper, and rose. Inside the penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower, the storm had completely cleared, leaving behind crisp, clean air and a breathtaking view of the city waking up below.

Sophia sat in a plush white armchair by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a soft silk robe that had been magically provided by an invisible wardrobe staff. In her lap, Emma was slowly waking up, her little fingers rubbing her eyes as she clutched her battered stuffed rabbit.

"Mommy?" Emma mumbled, her voice sweet and sleepy. "Are we still at the big party?"

"No, sweetheart," Sophia whispered, kissing the top of Emma’s curly hair with a tender smile. "We're somewhere safe now."

The heavy oak door of the suite opened silently, and Aleandro stepped inside. He had changed into a fresh, impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly combed. Gone was the blood and dust of the siege; in its place stood the undisputed king of New York’s corporate and underworld empire.

He walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping a few feet away from Sophia and Emma.

Emma turned her head, fixing her wide, midnight-blue eyes on the tall stranger. She didn't look scared. Instead, she tilted her head with the exact same curious expression Aleandro wore when evaluating a complex contract.

"You're the man who watched me dance," Emma said clearly, her childish voice breaking the quiet room.

Aleandro’s stern face softened, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his lips. He knelt down on one knee so he was eye-level with the three-year-old girl.

"I did," Aleandro replied, his voice unexpectedly gentle. "And it was the best dance I have ever seen."

Emma considered this for a moment, then reached out and held up her stuffed rabbit. "Mr. Bunny says thank you for letting us stay."

Aleandro chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that seemed to chase away the last remaining shadows of the previous night’s nightmare. He gently tapped the tip of Emma’s nose with his finger, then looked up at Sophia.

"The board of Romano Enterprises held an emergency meeting via encrypted video link at sunrise," Aleandro said, his tone turning professional as he addressed Sophia directly. "Julian has officially stepped down due to 'sudden health issues.' All assets have been absorbed into Moretti Global. The people who made your life a living hell in this city will never bother you again."

Sophia clutched the edge of her robe, her heart fluttering. "And... what happens to us, Aleandro? Do we go back to the apartment above the laundromat?"

Aleandro stood up slowly, stepping closer until he was standing right beside her chair. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently covering hers.

"Only if you want to visit it for nostalgia," Aleandro said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding conviction. "From this day forward, this penthouse is your home. My name is your shield. And every courtroom, boardroom, and ballroom in this city will know that Emma Moretti is my daughter, and you... are the only queen of my life."

Sophia’s breath hitched. She looked into his eyes—the same eyes that stared back at her from Emma’s face—and realized the ghost in the white apron was finally gone.
