Chapter 13 - The Council’s Ultimatum

The boardroom of the Sterling Council looked less like a corporate office and more like a medieval tribunal.

High vaulted ceilings supported dark oak beams. Tall, stained-glass windows filtered the grey Swiss light into muted reds and blues across a massive, circular mahogany table. Seven men and women sat in high-backed leather chairs, their faces obscured in the shadows, watching silently as Aleandro, Sophia, and Emma walked into the center of the room.

Marcus and two armed enforcers stood guard by the heavy iron-reinforced doors, their hands resting casually near their tactical rigs.

Sophia walked with her chin held high, holding Emma’s small, warm hand in hers. She felt no fear—only a burning, absolute clarity. She had lived in the shadows of men like these for years, scrubbing their floors and listening to their whispers. Now, she stood among them as an equal owner of their destinies.

“You brought a child to a council of state, Mr. Moretti?” a raspy, elderly female voice echoed from the shadows on the far side of the table. Madame Allemand, the primary shareholder of the Geneva syndicate.

“My daughter goes where I go,” Aleandro replied coldly, pulling out a chair for Sophia before taking his own seat at the center of the table. He did not invite Emma to sit; instead, he lifted her gently onto his lap, wrapping one large arm securely around her waist.

Henri Vance took his place at the head of the table, folding his hands neatly over a leather dossier.

“Let us dispense with the posturing,” Vance began, his voice echoing smoothly off the stone walls. “The Sterling Council controls fifty-one percent of the maritime logistics, real estate developments, and private banking channels across Western Europe. When Julian Romano attempted to seize your American shipping lanes six years ago, he was acting as our regional proxy.”

Sophia’s eyes narrowed. “He was trying to build his own empire.”

“Julian was a ambitious fool,” Vance corrected coolly. “He thought he could outsmart the Council. When you disappeared with his financial ledgers, Mrs. Moretti, you delayed our European consolidation by six years. And when Valentina foolishly attempted to eliminate you and your child at her engagement party to cover up her father's failures, she triggered a chain reaction that destroyed our entire American network.”

“And now you want it back,” Aleandro said, his dark eyes boring into Vance like twin drills.

“We want what is ours,” Vance replied smoothly. “Sign over seventy percent of Moretti Global’s international shipping rights to the Sterling Council. Resign your seat on the New York commission, and retire quietly to a private estate in South America with your housemaid and her bastard child.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Sophia felt her blood run hot. She opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could leave her lips, Aleandro’s deep, resonant voice filled the room.

“You think,” Aleandro began, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly soft whisper, “that because you sit behind stone walls in Geneva, you hold the power of life and death over my family.”

Vance smiled thinly. “We hold the keys to international trade, Mr. Moretti. Without our clearance codes, your ships cannot dock in a single European port.”

Aleandro didn't blink. He reached into his suit pocket with his free hand, pulling out a sleek, encrypted satellite phone. He placed it squarely in the center of the mahogany table and tapped the screen twice.

A digital projection flickered against the oak surface, displaying a real-time global financial ledger.

“Three minutes ago,” Aleandro said smoothly, “my chief financial officer executed a hostile liquidation of every offshore shell company the Sterling Council operates in the Cayman Islands, London, and Zurich.”

Vance’s polished demeanor instantly faltered. His eyes widened in shock as he lunged forward, staring at the glowing data.

“That’s impossible!” Vance gasped, his voice cracking. “Those accounts are protected by multi-layered encryption!”

“Encryption is only as good as the software engineer who wrote it,” Aleandro replied with a cold, humorless smirk. “And six years ago, when Sophia was working as an accountant’s assistant for Julian Romano... she didn't just steal ledgers. She mapped every single backdoor, encryption key, and offshore alias your syndicate ever created.”

Sophia leaned back in her chair, a calm, radiant smile touching her lips as she looked directly at Henri Vance.

“You spent years looking for the hacker who leaked your secrets,” Sophia said quietly, her voice ringing clear across the vaulted room. “I was cleaning your floors while holding your entire financial foundation in the palm of my hand.”

Before Vance or any of the council members could react, the heavy oak doors behind them flew open with a resounding crash.

Marcus and a dozen heavily armed Moretti operatives poured into the boardroom, their weapons raised with terrifying, professional precision.

“The Swiss federal police are currently raiding your Swiss bank servers downstairs,” Aleandro said, standing up slowly while still holding Emma safely in his arms. He looked down at the pale, trembling council members with absolute contempt. “Your empire is gone, Henri. The only thing left in this room is your surrender.”
