Chapter 4 - The Housemaid’s Secret

The private study on the third floor of the Moretti estate was a fortress of dark mahogany, leather-bound ledgers, and bulletproof glass. Down below, the flashing red and blue lights of private security vehicles painted the grand lawn in eerie strokes of crimson and azure.
Sophia sat stiffly on the edge of a deep velvet armchair, keeping Emma cradled tightly in her lap. The little girl had finally fallen asleep, exhausted from the strange night, her thumb tucked safely in her mouth while her stained cotton dress contrasted sharply with the multi-million-dollar opulence of the room.
Across from her, standing beside a glowing fireplace, Aleandro Moretti poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal tumbler. He hadn't touched a drop. He merely held it, his sharp eyes examining Sophia as if she were a complex cipher he was finally decoding.
"Six years ago," Aleandro began, his voice breaking the heavy silence, "a warehouse fire down by the Brooklyn docks wiped out half of my operation. The police called it an accident. My rivals called it a warning. I called it an inside job."
Sophia didn't look up, her fingers rhythmically stroking Emma’s soft curls. "I don't know anything about your docks, Mr. Moretti."
"Listen to me, Sophia," Aleandro commanded quietly, stepping closer. "Six years ago, you were working as an accountant’s assistant for one of Julian Romano’s shell companies. The night the warehouse burned, you disappeared. No tax records, no apartment lease, no trace. Until two years ago, when a quiet, desperate young woman with a fake ID applied for a maid position in my house."
He stopped right in front of her chair, towering over her like a dark monolith.
"You didn't hide from me to escape poverty, Sophia. You hid because you found the ledgers proving Julian Romano was planning a coup against the Moretti family. And when you realized you were pregnant with my child... you knew Julian would kill both of you the moment he found out."
Sophia’s hand froze in Emma’s hair. Slowly, she raised her head. Her midnight-blue eyes—the exact replica of the man standing before her—flashed with a mixture of long-suppressed fear and cold, hard fury.
"You think this is about your business?" Sophia’s voice shook, not with fear, but with rage. "You think I care about your shipping routes, your cartels, or your mafia wars? Do you have any idea what it’s like to live every single day looking over your shoulder, wondering if a silver-spoon psychopath like Valentina is going to look down her nose and throw you and your baby onto the street?"
She stood up abruptly, gently setting the sleeping Emma down on the velvet sofa. She faced Aleandro chest-to-chest, refusing to shrink back an inch.
"I didn't want your money. I didn't want your name. I wanted to live in peace!" Sophia’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "And tonight, your psychotic fiancée decided to use my daughter as a punchline for her wealthy friends, walking right into a crossfire that her own father engineered. You call yourself a king? You couldn't even protect your own engagement party from a family bloodbath!"
Aleandro didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He absorbed every bitter, furious word with a terrifying stillness.
When she finished, chest heaving, he reached out and gently caught her chin with his thumb and forefinger. His touch was surprisingly firm, yet impossibly tender.
"You're right," Aleandro murmured, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding intensity. "I let outsiders into my house. I let a monster like Valentina walk by your side for two years without ever seeing the woman who actually mattered."
He lowered his hand, turning toward the heavy oak door as a sharp knock echoed through the room.
"Marcus," Aleandro called out.
The door cracked open, and Marcus stepped inside, looking grim. "Boss, we intercepted an encrypted transmission leaving the east gate. Julian Romano’s private security detail is mobilizing. They aren't waiting for the police to sort out the murder. They’re sending a clean-up crew to clear the estate. They know Valentina botched the hit, and they know someone in this house saw too much."
May you like
Aleandro’s face hardened into a mask of pure, merciless ice. He turned back to Sophia, his eyes dark with a promise written in blood.
"They want a war?" Aleandro whispered, walking toward his mahogany desk where a heavy, custom-engraved firearm rested in a velvet-lined case. "Let’s show them what happens when a Moretti takes back what is his."
