Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Estate

The clock on the Moretti study wall clicked heavily toward midnight as the first silenced gunshot cracked through the lower gardens.
The shattering of a ground-floor greenhouse glass sounded like splintering ice, instantly swallowed by the roaring thunderstorm that had begun to lash the New York coastline. Rain slashed against the bulletproof windows of the third-floor study, turning the outside world into a swirling blur of bruised purple clouds and neon city reflections.
Sophia clutched Emma tighter against her chest. The little girl stirred, whimpering softly in her sleep, burying her face deeper into her mother’s shoulder.
"Stay here," Aleandro commanded, his voice dropping an octave as he checked the magazine of his sidearm with a sharp, metallic clack. He adjusted his holster over his tailored black vest, looking less like a businessman and more like the apex predator of the New York underworld.
"You can't leave us here alone," Sophia said, her voice sharp with panic. "If Julian's men break through—"
"They won't," Aleandro interrupted, turning his dark, unyielding gaze toward her. "Marcus and my inner circle hold the lower perimeter. But if anything happens... take the private elevator behind the bookshelf. It leads directly to the subterranean transit tunnel beneath the river. The code is your birthday."
Sophia blinked, stunned. "My... my birthday?"
"I might not have looked at you properly for two years, Sophia," Aleandro said softly, stepping close enough for her to feel the heat radiating from his broad shoulders, "but I memorized every detail about the quiet ghost who cleaned my floors. Don't die tonight. I have a lot of lost time to make up for."
Before Sophia could reply, a violent explosion rocked the eastern wing of the mansion.
The lights in the study flickered and died, plunging the room into immediate, suffocating darkness, save for the jagged forks of lightning slicing across the sky. Shouts echoed from the hallway below, followed by the rapid-fire staccato of automatic weapons.
Aleandro spun on his heel, kicked open the study door, and plunged into the darkened corridor where muzzle flashes painted the walls in brief, blinding strokes of white and red.
Sophia didn't hesitate. She grabbed Emma, dropped low to the floor, and scrambled toward the mahogany bookcase. Her fingers fumbled against the carved wooden panels until she found the hidden keypad.
0-9-1-4.
With a soft, pneumatic hiss, the heavy bookshelf swung outward, revealing a dark, concrete staircase descending into the earth. Sophia stepped inside just as a heavy round of gunfire shattered the study’s outer door, sending splinters flying across the room.
She pulled the hidden lever, sealing the wall shut behind her just as heavy boots thudded onto the landing outside.
In the pitch-black subterranean tunnel, guided only by the faint emergency floor-lights, Sophia ran. She ran for her life, and more importantly, for the tiny, warm heartbeat pressed against her chest.

She thought she was safe beneath the river.
She was wrong.
