Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Confrontation

Three days after the tragedy at the engagement gala, the fifty-second floor of the Moretti Tower played host to a very different kind of gathering.
The massive mahogany boardroom table, usually reserved for international shipping executives and syndicate capos, was filled with the remaining elders and board directors of the Romano family. They sat in stiff, terrified silence, their eyes fixed on the empty leather chair at the head of the table.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Aleandro Moretti walked in. He didn't wear a tie, his top shirt button casually undone, but the sheer, suffocating aura of power he projected made every grown man in the room shrink back into their seats.
Behind him walked Sophia.
She wore a sharp, custom-tailored emerald green pantsuit that commanded instant respect. Her posture was straight, her chin held high, and her expression was as cool and untouchable as polished marble. Trotting beside her, holding her hand, was Emma, wearing a brand-new, beautiful white dress and carrying her stuffed rabbit like a treasured royal scepter.
Marcus pulled out the primary seat at the head of the table for Sophia, while Aleandro took the seat beside her.
"Gentlemen," Aleandro’s voice cut through the silent room like a blade. "I assume you received the updated asset distribution documents sent to your legal teams this morning."
An elderly director with trembling hands swallowed hard, adjusting his glasses. "Mr. Moretti... transferring seventy percent of Romano Enterprises into a trust bearing the name Emma Moretti... that’s... that’s unprecedented. The shareholders—"
"The shareholders who object can join Julian in the East River," Aleandro interrupted smoothly, his tone entirely conversational. "Or they can direct their questions to the majority stakeholder."
He gestured gracefully toward Sophia.
All eyes turned to the former housemaid. Sophia leaned forward, resting her elbows on the mahogany table, her midnight-blue eyes scanning the terrified faces of the men who had once looked down on her with silent contempt.
"Let’s make one thing crystal clear," Sophia’s voice was calm, clear, and dripping with quiet authority. "I spent two years scrubbing your floors, listening to your insults, and watching your daughters treat human lives like disposable entertainment. That ends today."
She slid a thick dossier across the table, stopping right in front of the lead director.
"Those are the financial audits of every shell company Julian Romano used to embezzle funds from our shipping routes," Sophia continued evenly. "Every single one of you signed off on those transactions. I know your names, I know your Swiss bank accounts, and I know where your families live."
The lead director stared at the dossier as if it were a venomous snake. He didn't dare touch it.
"You have twenty-four hours to resign from this board and hand over your voting shares to the Moretti-Romano Trust," Sophia concluded, her voice unwavering. "Do that, and you keep your freedom. Refuse, and Aleandro won't even have to lift a finger—I’ll take you down myself."
Silence descended upon the boardroom—a heavy, absolute surrender.
One by one, the directors slowly bowed their heads, closing their briefcases and sliding away from the table. Within three minutes, the room was empty, save for Aleandro, Sophia, and little Emma, who was currently feeding her stuffed rabbit a pretend cup of water from a crystal glass.
Aleandro turned to Sophia, a slow, deeply admiring smile spreading across his face.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side," he murmured, leaning over to press a soft, lingering kiss to her temple.
Sophia smiled back, the last lingering ghosts of her past finally turning to dust. "You already survived my bad side, Aleandro. Now you just have to deal with the rest of my life."
